Bay School of San Francisco

San Francisco, CA

The Bay School is a start-up independent high school with an academic emphasis on science, technology, and ethics—and their crucial interrelationships. The project weaves together historic preservation, adaptive reuse, and environmental responsibility to convert an historic landmark Army barracks in the Presidio of San Francisco into vibrant, healthy and light filled places and spaces for learning.

The school serves a student body of 400 with 22 classrooms and seminar spaces, six science labs, art and music spaces, a 22,000-volume library, a student center and dining facility. The building renovation integrates resource-efficient design strategies, building systems and materials throughout, and requires less than half the energy consumption needed to construct and operate a new school building of comparable size.
