UC Berkeley Jacobs Hall for Design Innovation

UC Berkeley, CA

The mission of the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation at UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering is to foster technical depth, design innovation, and societal awareness, helping students connect under-the-hood details that make things work, with the big-picture context that makes things better.

Jacobs Hall is a 24,000 square foot interdisciplinary innovation hub that supports the Institute. It is a place for engineers, artists and academics to come together in a variety of light-filled, flexible “maker spaces” that foster hands-on, team-based collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas. The program offers space and tools for prototyping, iteration, and fabrication. The building is designed to reduce energy use by 90%, and its roof is covered by a solar electric power array, serving as a beacon of sustainable innovation that reflects the core values of the University and the Institute.
