North Beach Branch Library

This new two-story ground up library in North Beach is the latest addition to the SF Public Library system. Its two double height reading rooms – one for kids, one for adults – bookend the triangular building and provide great views up and down Columbus Avenue. Mid-block entries connect the busy Columbus Avenue frontage and the quieter Mason Street Plaza – a pedestrian space leading to the Joe DiMaggio Playground to the north. Generous glazing at the three corners of the building creates a triad of civic urban lanterns, while smaller scale openings direct views to the park and Columbus Avenue.
Responding to its unique and spectacular site, the library's design orients views to the neighborhood landmarks and iconic vistas. In keeping with the City of San Francisco’s commitment to a sustainable future, the North Beach Branch Library integrates sustainable design strategies to achieve LEED Gold certification.
